Skilled workers are in high demand and losing valued members of your team can be a catalyst for both capacity and morale issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retention and job satisfaction efforts need to be intentional, but this is a management component that is often de-prioritized to the detriment of the employer. A 2017 Gallup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/238079\/state-global-workplace-2017.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of the Global Workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report states that 85% of employees across the globe are dissatisfied with their jobs resulting in nearly $7 trillion in lost productivity each year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How? Well, the cost of replacing employees can be twice the price tag of their actual salaries. And replacing your highest performers is more expensive, still.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the fast-paced and often challenging roadmap of a scaling a business, the effects of employee turnover can be difficult to overcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong> \u201cGiven the talent wars we\u2019re engaged in and the cost of bringing new talent in employee retention has become the Golden Goose,\u201d states Neale Lewis, business coach and founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/nealelewis.com\/\">Neale Lewis Associates<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is retention so difficult and why do workers choose to leave a company? In his own blog <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nealelewis.com\/prevent-best-employees-quitting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Lewis challenges the notion that people leave because of their immediate supervisor, and points to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/01\/why-people-really-quit-their-jobs?autocomplete=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by HR executives at Facebook and Wharton Professor Adam Grant saying it\u2019s more about the work they\u2019re being asked to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how can you ensure you\u2019re giving your employees the kind of work that will inspire them to stay? Here are Lewis\u2019 top suggestions:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt\">Build Enjoyment into the Job<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us intuitively understand workers are more likely to stick around if they find the work they\u2019re doing enjoyable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It used to be a company would design a job and try to fit the best employee they could find into it. Now we know it can often be a more successful strategy to look at your star employees and build a job around them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that increased workers&#8217; efficiency depends on greater employee engagement, it is important to understand that highly engaged employees perform better than their colleagues, are really committed to the success of the company, and go above and beyond their job duties. One way to implement that is through effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agendrix.com\/blog\/scheduling-shifts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee shift scheduling<\/a>. Providing the employees with the option to share their availability, rotate shifts, or work specific hours on certain days directly impacts their performance and creates a win-win scenario for both employers and employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe key is to approach job design with a flexible mindset, looking for opportunities to mold in more enjoyable, beneficial work elements,\u201d says Lewis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more businesses are using tools to quantifiably measure employee enjoyment or job satisfaction. Tools like eNPS (employee net promoter score) or internal polls and surveys give management a data-based understanding of how employees feel about their job. These tools give management the ability to be more proactive in their retention strategies. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt\">Build Meaning into the Job<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managers are embracing transparency as a method for building a more motivated and engaged workforce. An employee should be able to clearly see how their individual work impacts the broader goals of the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt Subheading__body\">\u201cA company culture is built when every single employee\u2019s job is essential to the whole.\u201d<br \/>\nBrent Gleason<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/majority-of-workers-want-more-insight-on-how-their-efforts-affect-bottom-line-300309073.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Half Management Resources survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found that only 47% of workers understand how their day-to-day work affects the overall company performance. Making that connection from the company to individual level involves sharing the vision, recognizing employee contribution and making these conversations ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workers feel valued when they are trusted with access to information, challenged with decision-making responsibilities, and feel accountable as part of a team. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt\">Invest in their Learning and Growth<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis says that &#8212; especially considering millennials are now the largest cohort in the workforce &#8212; \u201cMore than ever your employees hunger to learn, grow, and realize more of their full potential.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shiftelearning.com\/blog\/the-true-cost-of-not-providing-employee-training\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBM study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that employees who do not feel they are developing in a company are 12 times more likely to leave it behind. Companies should treat employee training like an investment rather than an expense they should minimize.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt\">The Returns of Investing in Employees<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British business magnate, Richard Branson, famously said, \u201cCustomers do not come first. Employees come first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And prioritizing your employees does not need to happen at the expense of your customers. In fact, it\u2019s the opposite. According to customer service software company, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/10\/13\/customer-service-rightnow\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RightNow Technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 82% of customers leave a company because of a bad customer service experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And who\u2019s more likely to provide better service to your customers?
