To sum it up, product managers operate at the intersection of a company\u2019s user experience, technology and business practices, to make sure the company is delivering the right product, to the right users, in the right market. That sounds great on paper, but in application this expectation is flawed. My issues with it are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t really explain the type of person that gets into product management. It just attempts to describe some of the skills that a product manager might possess.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It conjures up a negative connotation of a product manager being a \u201cjack-of-all-trades, master of none.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtheproduct.com\/2017\/03\/learning-product-ellen-chisa-producttank-nyc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellen Chisa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also shares my uneasiness with this description. In a recent ProductTank talk, she explains most product managers actually step into the role with a more in-depth education or professional expertise focused on one of these areas rather than all three. To say that a product manager typically is perfectly balanced in the middle of this overlap is too generalized in the context of \u201cthe average\u201d PM. In reality, a PM\u2019s skillset is more targeted and dependent on the individual\u2019s personal and professional background.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, with a little extra explanation, I do think the diagram adds value in that it visualizes one of a product manager\u2019s key roles &#8211; to act as the glue between key functions of a company. And what makes a PM extra gluey is being an ace communicator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the best advice I\u2019ve gotten from coworkers and mentors over the years is how to improve my communication style. For example, my great friend Ryan Bricklemyer, Director of Product Management at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verve.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taught me the trick of ending a presentation with<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWhat questions do you have?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cDo you have any questions?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating the small things in your daily communication makes a big psychological impact on the effectiveness of a product manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two communication areas in particular that I had to focus on early on were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over communicate, and don\u2019t leave opportunities to fill in the blanks with bad assumptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same message requires a different delivery style for different stakeholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the product manager at Align, I use our communication tools to further develop my personal and professional communications habits. The features are really useful as our organization is rapidly changing &#8211; we use our own tools to help mitigate the growing pains that come with scaling a business. Here are a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt\">1. Managing Different Stakeholder Groups with Daily Huddles<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I participate in two daily huddles, each with different participants and goals. Even though I may be talking about the same topic in both huddles, I need to craft that message differently. My morning huddle with the development team is scrum-style, tactical and usually jargon-filled. That makes sense for that group; we\u2019re in the weeds making technical improvements in the product. Right after that, we have our full team huddle. Everything we went over in the development huddle doesn\u2019t get talked about here. But for the items that do, I need to be communicating higher-level, without jargon and with a customer-facing mindset. Although it used to frustrate me to do this, I have to assume that this may be the first time some in that group have heard this topic, even if I\u2019ve brought it up several times (over communicate, don\u2019t leave space for assumptions). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonus tip: when I\u2019m molding my technical talking points to a more general audience, I try to keep in mind the \u201cworking backwards\u201d style that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-is-Amazons-approach-to-product-development-and-product-management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ian McAllister<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pioneered at Amazon with the Internal Press Release concept.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignnone wp-image-3013 size-large\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%271024%27%20height%3D%27278%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%201024%20278%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%271024%27%20height%3D%27278%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/aligntoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image-10-2.png\" alt=\"Align_huddle_communication\" width=\"1024\" height=\"278\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignnone wp-image-3000 size-large\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%271024%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%201024%20300%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%271024%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/aligntoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image-3.png\" alt=\"Daily_Huddle_communication_2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Same message, different styles<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Font__title Font__title--alt\">2. Formal Communication with Team Announcements<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hey, I like carpeting Slack channels and linking to Confluence documents as much as anyone else. But I always need to keep reminding myself to make sure my critical messages hit my target audience at the right place, at the right time. Since the Align team thinks the best place to coordinate and track our team goals is in \u2026 Align (imagine that), I take advantage of the Team Announcements feature to post important messages, such as internal release notes. Managing Up With Stucks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If progress on one of my quarterly goals is being held up by someone on my team, it\u2019s obviously important that I let them know ASAP. However, if this Stuck isn\u2019t holding me up from doing my job right this second, it usually doesn\u2019t need to be a fire drill. \u201cCalibrating the urgency\u201d in my communication is even more important when the roadblock is a C-suite or team leader. I need to tell them I have a problem, and I need to keep repeating it a few times until they notice, as they\u2019re all juggling a million other things.
